4-H Youth and Development

Our 4-H program provides a creative a supportive environment in which culturally diverse youth and adults can reach their full potential. Our local county program works to develop life skills to help young people become self-directed, productive citizens. We also work to empower adult volunteers who multiply the efforts of our local county Extension staff. For information contact: at (505) 396-2819

4-H Realizes the Power and Promise of Today’s Youth The 4-H youth development movement provides opportunities for all youth ages 5 – 19 to participate in innovative, fun programs through which they can develop valuable, lifelong skills. Today, 4-H in the United States involves seven million youth, 50 million alumni, and more than 1,000 learn-by-doing programs ranging from leadership and nutrition to rocketry and agriculture. 4-H’ers learn valuable skills, have fun, make new friends, solve problems, earn awards and recognition, practice citizenship, develop leadership ability, and make a difference in their communities. There are currently 240 4-H members in Lea County participating in projects such as: Clothing Shooting Sports Food and Nutrition Leadership Animal Science Horticulture Livestock Small Engines And many, many more!!!!

    LEA COUNTY 4-H FLASH MAY 2008 JUDGING PRACTICE All practices will be held at the courthouse unless otherwise notified. Wayne Judging practices will not begin until after the end of school. Practice for Wildlife and Crops will be on Monday and Wednesday at 8:30 am. Practice for Livestock and Meats will be on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 am. Shannon Monday, May 5th- Home Ec. If there are any questions please give Shannon a call! HORSE CERTIFICATES Horse certificates for horses to be shown at the Lea County Fair ONLY are due May 25th. This includes regular horse, prospect colts, futurity and versatility. It is not required that your horse be registered with a specific breed or that you have registration papers in hand on horses that are registered. DISTRICT HORSE SHOW 2008 District 4-H Horse Show will be on June 21st at the Curry County Fairgrounds in Clovis STATE 4-H HORSE SCHOOL New Mexico State 4-H horse school will be June 9 – 13, 2008 at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque. It is important that you check every month to see if any of the dates have been changed or new dates added. .RABBIT WORKSHOP Zach Weber will hold a rabbit workshop on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 10:30 at the Lea County Fair Grounds Rabbit Barn. Participants may bring one rabbit to the workshop to work on showmanship skills, and learn about their rabbits and how to care for them. For more information call Zach at 392-7445. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT 4-H’ers enrolled in the Digital Photography project should go to the following web-site for your project book and information about the project. http://cahe.nmsu.edu/4h/photography/ NEW MEXICO STATE 4-H LIVESTOCK SCHOOLS JUNE 24 – 27, 2008 All schools will be at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque. You must be currently enrolled as a 4-H or FFA member, agent, AG teacher, leader, or parent to attend. Deadline for registration for all schools is June 1, 2008. Applications must be picked up in the County Extension office. 2008 LEA COUNTY FAIR The 2008 Lea County Fair books are now available online at leacounty.net The Extension office will be closed May 26th in observance of Memorial Day. What is a 4-H Club?

Many 4-H youth participate in 4-H through their 4-H Clubs. 4-H Clubs are small groups of youth supervised by one or more adult volunteer leaders. 4-H Club members hold regular meetings, elect officers, plan programs, and work on 4-H projects. 4-H Clubs usually meet in a school, community center, the volunteers leader’s home, or a member’s home.
