Lea County has a population of 60,500. The economy is based on oil, gas and agriculture.

The two largest towns of Lea county are Lovington, the county seat, and Hobbs. The smaller communities of Eunice and Jal are located to the south of Hobbs and Tatum is 22 miles north of Lovington.

The College of the Southwest and New Mexico Junior College are located at Hobbs along with Harry McAdams State Park and the newly constructed Lea County Western Heritage Museum. The newly refurbished Lea County Museum is in Lovington.
